These works, instead of the traditional exclusive treatment of single countries and nations and their political, cultural, and linguistic identities, take as their subject larger areas, such as the countries of East-Central Europe or the entire Iberian Peninsula or whole continents as North or South America. The essay, after a quick examination of some recent histories that continue to privilege the national and literary dimension of the matter under consideration, engages on a more detailed analysis of a number of interesting new histories, which concentrate on the cultural and literary production of wider geographic zones. A discussion on the increasingly problematic relationship between history of literature and national identity.
